Guardians of the land and people
and makers of exceptional wine

In Māori folklore, Taniwha, (pronunciation Taa-ne-fa) are creatures that live in the deep pools of rivers, caves, or in the sea. They are highly respected as protective guardians of people and places.
The Rose family follow the same ideology of caring for and protecting both land and people.
The lifeblood of the Marlborough region is the mighty Wairau River which starts in the Southern Alps flowing 170kms (110 miles) down the Wairau Valley to the Pacific Ocean. The river is the focus of local legend and an integral part of folklore around the region.
The Rose family’s legacy is deeply rooted in the Rapaura district of Marlborough, which runs along the Southern banks of the Wairau River.
“As a farming family our decision making has always been grounded in our responsibilities to the land and our people. Recognising that pastoral farming was no longer the best fit for the land was our first step towards growing grapes.” says Rose Family Estate, CEO, Lindsay Parkinson.
Family, both immediate and encompassing the wider team, is at the heart of Rose Family Estate. Several of Phil & Chris Rose’s adult children (and their partners) are at the helm of Rose Family Estate today. The team spirit throughout the company comes from strong shared values and a sense of belonging.
Chief winemaker, Nick Entwistle, sums this up by saying “it’s something very special to have everyone involved and so engaged with what we’re trying to achieve as a team”.

Viticulture and winemaking
The Rose family have strategically increased their vineyard holdings, focusing on the northern side of the Wairau Valley, to ensure quality, stylistic integrity, and supply.
Estate vineyards comprise 500ha. Most of the vineyards are just 10 minutes away; and the furthest one a mere 30 minutes from the winery, ensuring fruit is processed within an hour of picking, maximising flavour concentration, freshness and quality.
Viticulturalist Hamish Rose and brother, Winemaker Sam Rose share a lifetime of experience in these vineyards, drawing on it every vintage.
Each of the 14 vineyard sites have distinct flavour profiles that allow the team lead by Nick Entwistle to create the elegant, beautifully balanced wines, year on year.

The winery, built in 2002 can crush up to 10,000 tons of fruit and is sited at the Rapaura vineyard, central to the estate. Fruit can to be transported from vineyard to winery within 30 minutes. The short time between picking and processing maximises flavour concentration, freshness, and quality.
The winery also includes a bottling line and warehouse allowing Rose Family Estate to be able to produce 650,000 cases per year. That’s 7,800,000 bottles of wine grown, made and packaged.
All decisions are made in-house from harvesting to winemaking, bottling and warehousing, meaning that there is 100% control from vine to bottle.

Tasting note

RIVERLORE SAUVINGON BLANC
Sourced from our family vineyards across the Marlborough region, these grapes were harvested in the cool hours of the morning, gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. After blending the wine is left to settle on light lees before bottling.
